Newport hit back to hold high-flying Exeter

Newport held Sky Bet League Two pacesetters Exeter to a 1-1 draw at Rodney Parade.

A first-half goal from Lee Martin saw the visitors lead at half-time, with Tristan Abrahams’ penalty salvaging a draw.

Exeter started strongly with a Randell Williams header forcing Tom King into a superb save. Newport’s Josh Sheehan was then shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Nicky Law.

The visitors took the lead in the 16th minute when a cross from Dean Moxey was turned into the back of the net by Martin.

Newport dominated the second half, with Jamille Matt firing inches wide from an Abrahams cross. The Exiles were awarded a penalty after 64 minutes when Sheehan was tripped in the area by Tom Parkes.

Abrahams drilled home his spot-kick to level and Newport threw everything at Exeter in the closing stages but had to settle for a draw.
