Jackett left frustrated as Portsmouth held by 10-man Burton

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett was left frustrated after his side toiled to a 2-2 draw at home to Burton despite playing against 10 men for 65 minutes.

Brett Pitman’s penalty five minutes into stoppage time saw Pompey scrape a point after being 2-0 down with only six minutes played.

But The Brewers had defender John-Joe O’Toole sent off in the 25th minute and Jackett said: “It is frustrating.

“Six points from six games is not where we want to be so we have to keep working away. We need a win or a series of wins to turn our season around.

“It was a disappointing start but we had enough time and enough even at 2-0 to get something out of the game.

“We had some big chances in the second half. Their goalkeeper had a good game. It would have been nice to have a few more minutes to win the game.”

Burton got off to a flying start and Joe Sbarra put the visitors in front with only three minutes played by sweeping in Joe Wallace’s low cross.

Kieran Wallace’s deflected 25-yard strike three minutes later gave Pompey a mountain to climb before O’Toole’s dismissal gave them a route back into the game.

Republic of Ireland international Ronan Curtis halved the deficit six minutes before half-time with a close-range finish after John Marquis’ initial header had been saved.

Curtis thought he had equalised with a bullet header only for Burton goalkeeper Kieran O’Hara to keep it out with a wonder save.

Pompey were gifted an equaliser when Ellis Harrison was brought down in the box and veteran Pitman lashed the resulting penalty into the roof of the net.

Burton manager Nigel Clough, whose side are now seven games unbeaten, felt aggrieved by the penalty award.

Clough said: “It was a soft penalty. There was contact but even Ellis Harrison said it was soft.

“But if you give the referee a decision to make it can go against you sometimes.

“Coming here tonight I would have taken a 2-2 before the game but obviously it is hard to take as we were so close to a win.

“We have come up against one of the teams fancied for promotion and more than matched them.

“We are seven games unbeaten and I hope we can take belief from that, that we can challenge for promotion.

“I have no complaints about the sending off.”
