Paterson joined the Rams this month on a season-long loan from Tuesday night’s opponents and the 27-year-old forward is ineligible against his parent club.
Graeme Shinnie, who was left out of the matchday squad at Stoke at the weekend, and Duane Holmes, who is returning from a thigh injury, are both set to play for the Under-23 side at Southampton on Monday evening.
Andre Wisdom continues to work his way back from a knee problem that he had towards the end of last season.
City will check on the fitness of midfielder Adam Nagy before travelling to Pride Park.
The Hungarian summer signing was impressive during the home win against QPR before he was forced off at half-time with what looked like an ankle knock.
Pedro Pereira is fit again after a dead leg and the Portuguese right-back will be pushing for a starting place.
Midfielder Marley Watkins, forward Saikou Janneh and goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa continue their rehabilitation.
