MANCHESTER UNITED are preparing a £70million transfer bid for Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes, reports say.

Manchester United are keen to sign Fernandes from Sporting this transfer window amid their need for midfield reinforcements.

The Red Devils look a little short when it comes to the middle of the park following the recent exits of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini.

Herrera left Manchester United for Ligue 1 giants PSG, explaining the decision by saying: “I was very happy, I have a lot to thank the club and the fans for it and also to [manager Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer.

“He did a lot for me to stay, but things did not happen, [United] arrived late, and by then I had already made the decision to play in Paris.”

Fellaini, meanwhile, left for the Chinese Super League back in January.

And Portuguese newspaper O Jogo claim United are preparing a massive £70m bid for Fernandes.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford all summer but now, at long last, it appears the Red Devils are poised to make their move.

Fernandes hit a huge 31 goals for Sporting last season as the club finished third in the Primeira Liga table.

And United feel his goals from the middle of the park could help them close the gap on the Premier League elite.

Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently admitted he was still looking to strengthen his squad.

The Red Devils have landed Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Swansea and Crystal Palace respectively.

But Solskjaer wants more.

“I know it's hard getting players in and over the line,” the Norwegian said.

“We've been doing our jobs. We've been finding, identifying players. Scouting them.

“But they have got clubs. It took time with Aaron (Wan-Bissaka), it took time with Dan (James), but they got it over the line.

“It's not like we're going to sign 10 players. It can't be a quick fix.

“We're working on one or two and we're still hoping, but I also understand that the market has changed. Prices have soared.”
