Craig McCracken hits winner as Auchinleck Talbot stun Ayr in Scottish Cup

Auchinleck Talbot continued their dream William Hill Scottish Cup journey with a shock 1-0 win over Championship neighbours Ayr.

Auchinleck, last season’s Scottish Junior Cup winners, dispatched five teams to reach the fourth round – matching their previous best run in the competition – and more than held their own against their high-flying rivals who made the 15-mile trip to Beechwood Park.

Ayr had an early penalty appeal waved away before Michael Moffat fired just wide as they struggled to turn their possession into goals and almost paid the price in the 26th minute.

Graham Wilson gave the Talbot fans something to cheer about with a tremendous finish from seven yards, but their jubilant celebrations were cut short after the strike was ruled out for offside.

Efforts from Robbie Crawford and Moffat failed to test Andy Leishman in the Auchinleck goal as the first half finished goalless, but the hosts came out firing at the start of the second period.

Dwayne Hyslop somehow headed wide from six yards for the Talbot before Craig Moore blazed his first-time effort over the crossbar at the other end of the pitch.

William Lyle almost gifted Ayr the lead when he headed past Leishman but also wide of his own goal, however the Auchinleck fans were in dreamland when law student Craig McCracken headed home in the 77th minute to secure their first win over a Scottish Football League outfit and a place in the fifth round.
