Derek Adams praises Plymouth players after seeing off Southend

Plymouth boss Derek Adams felt his side were more dominant than their 3-2 Sky Bet League One win at Southend suggests.

United scored twice in the final five minutes after the Pilgrims had raced into a 3-0 lead at Roots Hall.

And Adams was adamant that second-from-bottom Plymouth were by far the better team.

“It was a very good and sweet performance and we were far better than Southend from the start to the finish of the game,” said Adams.

“It was a very good, accomplished performance and they all deserve top marks for it.

“We ran and ran and ran, we pressed them all over the pitch and used the ball well.

“Even the home fans were clapping us at times. We played in behind them down the sides and that enabled us to get the victory.

“They got the penalty and then a fantastic goal right at the end which did make the scoreline flattering for Southend.”

Plymouth broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when a poor defensive header from Stephen Hendrie enabled Antoni Sarcevic to confidently fire a low shot into the bottom left corner.

Freddie Ladapo was then denied by Shrimpers goalkeeper Nathan Bishop when clean through on goal but, four minutes into the second half, the striker strode onto David Fox’s long ball forward before firing home.

The Pilgrims made it 3-0 in the 73rd minute with a close-range effort from Ruben Lameiras before Southend replied with an 85th-minute penalty from Simon Cox.

Charlie Kelman – a 17-year-old Shrimpers substitute – then netted from close to the halfway line on his league debut.

But the Pilgrims hung on to secure all three points, much to the frustration of Southend boss Chris Powell.

“We’re low on confidence at home and that’s worrying because the boys look edgy,” said Powell.

“We’re in a difficult place with trying to put out a team and trying to get some consistency and rhythm.

“I’m not speaking out of turn but we’re without my first-choice back five.

“You’re putting in players but it will be tough for them because there are so many scenarios they haven’t been through.

“But if you want to take something from the game it was Charlie’s goal.

“He’s a young talent who has been in and around the group.

“We all like him and he was a real livewire when he came on.

“It was a wonderful goal and it’s the only positive I’ll take from today.

“He gave us a spark and I’ll encourage him to keep playing his part.”
