Stevie Crawford’s first game in caretaker charge of Dunfermline ended in defeat as Dundee United claimed a 1-0 win and moved level on points with second-placed Ayr.
Manager Allan Johnston and his assistant Sandy Clark left the Pars this week on the back of three wins in 12 and Nicky Clark’s solitary strike ensured another defeat.
Visiting striker Aidan Keena had the first chance of the game in the ninth minute but his low 20-yard drive was saved by Benjamin Siegrist.
Dundee United responded and when Cammy Smith’s corner was headed back into the six-yard box by Pavol Safranko, Frederic Frans’ header was saved by Lee Robinson.
Chances were at a premium for the remainder of the first half but Safranko brought a save from the keeper early in the second after robbing a defender.
Clark had fired inches wide shortly before grabbing the winner for the home side with nine minutes remaining. Substitutes Aidan Nesbitt and Clark combined, with the latter powering in a header from close range.
