Newport seal Leicester clash with replay victory over ten-man Wrexham

Newport County will host Premier League Leicester City in the third round of the FA Cup after Mike Flynn’s side secured a comfortable 4-0 win over 10-man Wrexham at Rodney Parade.

After the two teams had drawn 0-0 in north Wales, a second-round replay was needed and it sparked into life with Wrexham’s Luke Young dismissed in just the 13th minute.

With a man advantage, Newport dominated and striker Padraig Amond – who netted against Tottenham in this competition last season – scored one and made two more.

Facing the Foxes in January will earn Newport in the region of £150,000.

A quiet opening burst into life in the 13th minute when Young’s horror lunge on Mickey Demetriou saw him rightly dismissed. The red card sparked a mass melee between the two teams.

Home defender Dan Butler and Wrexham’s Shaun Pearson and Rob Lainton were all booked for their part in the brawl as Demetriou limped back into action.

The hosts dominated and had their chances, but they used the ball poorly and couldn’t break through and only a superb Joe Day save stopped Paul Rutherford from putting Wrexham ahead. Amond finally put County ahead at the start of the second half.

Butler swung in a corner, Fraser Franks headed across goal, and Amond couldn’t miss.

Amond then laid on a second for Jamille Matt, who side-footed home to leave the game over as a contest by the hour mark.

Wrexham never looked like mounting a comeback and their misery was complete when Amond drove the ball across the box and Mark Carrington diverted past his goalkeeper for an own goal.

Amond struck the post as he continued his one-man demolition job, but Butler made it four late on with a stunning left-foot strike from 35 yards.
