Elijah Adebayo’s first-half strike earned Richie Wellens his first win as Swindon manager after a 1-0 Sky Bet League Two win at Port Vale.
Swindon went ahead after 11 minutes when Adebayo, a late replacement for the injured Marc Richards, reacted first after goalkeeper Scott Brown parried Scott Twine’s backheeled volley, to net from close range on a crisp afternoon at Vale Park.
Neil Aspin’s hosts went close as Tom Conlon forced Swindon goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux into a low stop before Tom Pope headed over.
Vale began the second half well, with substitute Louis Dodds drilling just over from 25 yards, and Ben Whitfield seeing his shot deflected narrowly wide.
In the closing stages Connell Rawlinson saw his header for Vale cleared off the line by Steven Alzate from Conlon’s corner, while Swindon’s Keshi Anderson shot straight at Brown.
Substitute Scott Quigley missed a great chance to earn Vale a point, heading straight into the grasp of Vigouroux, as Swindon held on to move up to 14th position.
