Bayern Munich 3 - 3 Fortuna Dusseldorf: Dodi Lukebakio treble denies Bayern Munich overdue victory

A last-gasp equaliser from Dodi Lukebakio to complete his hat-trick extended Bayern Munich’s poor run as they surrendered a two-goal advantage to draw 3-3 with Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Bayern had taken a 2-0 lead within half an hour and looked set to secure three Bundesliga points when Thomas Muller slotted the ball home from outside the box to make it 3-1.

But Lukebakio’s stoppage-time equaliser leaves Bayern in fifth place and nine points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Niklas Sule opened the scoring in the 18th minute for Bayern, taking advantage of a poor clearance from a corner to net.

The hosts doubled their lead minutes later through Thomas Muller, who was set up by Jerome Boateng.

Dusseldorf got a goal back just before half-time, when Boateng failed to pick up the run of Jean Zimmer, whose attempted bicycle kick came off the defender and fell to Lukebakio for a tap-in.

Bayern dominated much of the possession in the early part of the second half and, despite a chance for Frank Ribery, they were unable to find the net.

After being honoured before the match for their centuries of international caps, Robert Lewandowski and Muller linked up expertly to restore Bayern’s two-goal advantage.

The Poland striker perfectly set up Muller on the outside of the box and the German made no mistakes in restoring Bayern’s cushion.

Dusseldorf were not without opportunities before Lukebakio raced clear inside the Bayern half and calmly put the ball past Manuel Neuer. The flag went up, but VAR overruled the decision.

A late chance to wrap the game up was hit high and wide by Lewandowski, who has never scored against Dusseldorf, the only Bundesliga side he has yet to punish.

Bayern have not won at home in the league since beating Bayern Leverkusen 3-0 on September 15, and they will be hoping for a change in fortunes when they take on Benfica in the Champions League next week.
