The huge claim was made on BBC’s Football Focus today.
Speaking to Kevin Kilbane, the ex-Manchester United striker said: “For too many years Everton has been a club that has been finishing sixth or seventh.
"I think what really changed things is Leicester winning the league.
"But, no disrespect to Leicester, Everton are a bigger club and I think Everton has to move forward.
"I think we’ve got owners in place who are willing to back the club and I think Everton can be a major force in English football again.

Hopefully, I can be here to see that happen.”
It was fair to say the football world watching his interview didn’t agree with his beliefs.
Dozens of viewers responded with gifs of people laughing, showing their mockery of his views.
Others wrote their complaints, with one saying: “That is the most ridiculous statement I’ve ever heard."
Another took aim at his “bigger club” claims, saying: “It’s been 23 years since Everton have won anything.
"Based on that simple fact, currently, Everton are not a ‘much bigger’ club.”
And a third joked: “And Barnsley will win the Champions League, Wayne.”
