Whitaker and Durrell both bag braces as Macclesfield blow Tranmere away

Leaders Macclesfield sent out a clear warning in the Vanarama National League title race with an emphatic 4-1 win away to fellow promotion hopefuls Tranmere.
Danny Whitaker and Elliott Durrell scored two goals apiece as the visitors pulled five points clear in front of a crowd of 7,385. Tranmere dropped to sixth, a further two points back.
Macclesfield had to wait until first-half stoppage time for their opener, with Whitaker converting after Durrell put the ball into the box, and were pegged back by Andy Cook four minutes into the second half.
Durrell’s long-range strike quickly restored the lead, though, and Whitaker added a penalty after Liam Ridehalgh was penalised for handball.
Durrell struck again on the counter and Mitch Hancox had one cleared off the line as rampant Macclesfield finished the job in style.
