Footage captured by a fan at the game shows the Portuguese manager responding to chants of “f*** off Mourinho”, sung by some in the stands on his return to Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho, 54, held up three fingers at the offenders, reminding them how many titles he won over the course of two successful spells in west London.
The clip has gone viral since being uploaded to Twitter, as supporters of other clubs slammed the disrespect shown by some at the ground.
Jose Mourinho responded to Chelsea fans' taunts at Stamford Bridge
"Horrible bunch Chelski fans they'd be nothing without Mourinho and oil money,” wrote one viewer.
Another said: “Grateful for what Mourinho has achieved for us in the past never will I hate the guy.”
"These are the kind of ‘fans’ that embarrass the club,” a third added.
Chelsea fans gave their former boss a less than rosy welcome back to the Bridge
"After what this man did for the club that twice turned its back on him.”
Mourinho departed Stamford Bridge for a second time in 2015, taking a short break from the game before heading to Old Trafford as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May 2016.
N’Golo Kante scored the only goal of the game as Antonio Conte’s side overcame a resilient United team reduced to 10 men early in the first half.
Ander Herrera was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence after carelessly whacking Belgian winger Eden Hazard.
