Bury 2 - 1 Coventry: Leon Clarke at the double for Bury to down former club

Posted Sunday, September 27, 2015 by PA

Leon Clarke scored both goals against former club Coventry to give Bury a 2-1 home victory.

Clarke gave the Shakers a 19th-minute lead before doubling it with a 51st-minute penalty.

Reda Johnson pulled one back 11 minutes later but Bury held on for their fourth straight win to go joint-fourth with the Sky Blues.

Coventry's Jacob Murphy had an early shot blocked by Peter Clarke, but Bury caught the visitors out with a training-ground move after winning a free-kick just outside the left side of the box.

Chris Hussey rolled it towards the penalty spot, where Clarke had found space to sidefoot into the top corner.

Coventry replied with Tom Armstrong firing wide but Bury captain Nathan Cameron then headed against the bar from a Hussey corner.

The visitors threatened again before the break, Ryan Kent blazing over after cutting inside.

But Johnson pushed Clarke just after the interval and although Lee Burge got a hand to Clarke's low spot-kick, he could not keep it out.

Johnson made amends by heading home following an Armstrong corner, before Marcus Tudgay saw a close-range effort blocked by Rob Lainton.

The Bury keeper then parried Marc-Antoine Fortune's long-range strike while Sam Ricketts fired a 20-yard strike against the bar, but the Shakers survived.
