Cambridge United 1 - 1 Stevenage Borough: U's leave it late again

Posted Sunday, March 15, 2015 by PA

Cambridge salvaged a late point with another injury-time goal in a 1-1 draw at home to Stevenage.

It was the second game in a row they had struck late on to earn a point as, trailing with seconds remaining of the five added minutes, Richard Tait's long throw was flicked into the path of substitute Robbie Simpson, who turned the ball home from close range.

The game was almost devoid of chances, though the hosts created the first opening 16 minutes in when Ryan Donaldson's flick played Jordan Slew in, but his effort was beaten away by goalkeeper Chris Day.

Stevenage were ahead a minute later as David Martin's dubiously-awarded free-kick was headed out to Dean Wells, who thrashed a volley beyond Chris Dunn.

Chances were scarce throughout the remainder of the game as Cambridge looked to respond.

Sullay Kaikai came closest with a free-kick that hit a defender while Dean Parrett was just off target at the other end with a similar set piece.

Stevenage had looked set to climb into the play-off places until Simpson's intervention kept them out of the top six on goal difference.
