Cambridge could hand Norwich loanee Cameron McGeehan his debut.
The 19-year-old midfielder is with United until February 16 and can play in their FA Cup tie with Manchester United.
Boss Richard Money must decide whether to throw McGeehan in or keep faith with the side which beat Carlisle 1-0 last week.
The U's this week released striker Adam Cunnington, who had spent time on loan at Bristol Rovers this season, after almost two years with the club.
Newport look set to include Regan Poole in their squad to make the trip despite interest from Fulham.
The 16-year-old defender could keep his place having played 90 minutes in the 1-0 win over Portsmouth last weekend before Cottagers boss Kit Symons spoke publicly of his desire to snap up the Welshman.
Mark Byrne's goal sent County third in the division and manager Justin Edinburgh could name an unchanged starting line-up.
One player who will not be involved is striker Danny Crow, who left Rodney Parade on Thursday after three years with the Exiles.
