David Worrall's third goal in five games secured Southend a 1-0 win against rock-bottom Hartlepool at Roots Hall.
The lively winger fired home the game's only goal midway through the second half.
And that ensured the Shrimpers immediately bounced back from last weekend's shock FA Cup defeat to Conference club Chester.
The Shrimpers were well worth the win and Worrall, Barry Corr and Kevan Hurst all forced Hartlepool goalkeeper Scott Flinders in to action in the first half.
Flinders impressively denied Michael Timlin after the break but he could no nothing to stop Worrall bagging the only goal of the game in the 65th minute.
The winger collected a pass from Corr before charging forward and firing home a low, left-footed shot from 12 yards.
However, Hartlepool hit back after going behind with Daniel Bentley tipping a long range shot from Charlie Wyke wide of the left post before Bradley Walker fired just inches wide.
