Oldham Athletic AFC 1 : 0 Leyton Orient - Jones blow knocks out Orient

A superb goal by Mike Jones saw Oldham beat Leyton Orient 1-0 and book their place in the FA Cup second round.

There was little to choose between the two League One rivals, but Jones settled the tie in the 38th minute as Oldham stretched their unbeaten home run to 10 games.

After a tame opening spell, Orient almost took the lead when Dean Cox's powerful shot from 12 yards was brilliantly saved by Oldham keeper Paul Rachubka.

But it was the hosts who went ahead as Jones curled in from a 20-yard free-kick to leave Gary Woods with no chance.

Orient's Chris Dagnall wasted a half-chance before Jones went close again, drilling over the bar after Carl Winchester produced a surging run from inside his own half.

Shaun Batt could have levelled for the O's after 54 minutes, only to shoot weakly at Rachubka when well placed inside the box.

Orient captain Nathan Clarke had a goal disallowed when he was penalised for pushing, but Oldham's Danny Philliskirk was denied by the woodwork in injury time.
