Walsall's top scorer Tom Bradshaw marked his return from injury with the only goal against Chesterfield to end his team's desperate run of three successive defeats.

He finished of a fine move between Anthony Forde and Michael Cain with a close-range drive for his sixth goal of the season in the 61st minute at the Banks's Stadium.

Powerful Chesterfield had the better of the first half, but Walsall carved out the best chance in the 21st minute when Romaine Sawyers found Andy Taylor but after his cross reached the unmarked Bradshaw, his weak header was comfortably saved by Tommy Lee.

Then Sawyers sent a 20-yard drive flashing past the far post before the Spireites almost took the lead in the 39th minute, Dan Gardner crossing a beauty which Sam Clucas met with a downward header which flashed just wide.

Chesterfield looked the more likely winners in the second half, but their finishing let them down time and again.

During five minutes of stoppage time Mal Benning had a close range drive blocked for the Saddlers, but then Clucas headed wide for Chesterfield then substitute Gary Roberts screwed the ball wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
