MANCHESTER UNITED have been rocked by the news that Edinson Cavani has snubbed a move to Old Trafford.

REJECTION: PSG and Uruguay star Cavani has turned down Manchester United's approach

But United moved a step closer to signing William Carvalho last night after bidding £25m for the Sporting Lisbon midfielder.

Under-fire boss David Moyes has been promised up to £200m to spend in the transfer market this summer and made Cavani his top target.

United were willing to smash their transfer record to lure the Uruguay hitman to Old Trafford from Paris Saint Germain in an £80m deal.

It is understood United bosses sounded out Cavani several months ago about a possible move and were willing to offer him a contract worth around £280,000-a-week.

But Starsport can reveal Cavani has changed his mind and snubbed United because he reckons they are a club in decline.

A source close to Cavani told Starsport: "He is well aware of United's interest in him and at one stage this might have seemed like an attractive proposal.

"But the fact is Manchester United can no longer offer him the standard of football he wants or thinks he deserves.

"The club is going through huge changes and he doesn't feel the time is right to even consider going to Old Trafford."

MORE HEARTACHE: Moyes' side havr struggled on the pitch this season and could be set for further woe in the transfer market

It is understood Cavani has expressed concerns about the long-term future of United under Moyes's leadership and will look elsewhere if he decides to leave the French giants.

Cavani joined PSG from Napoli last summer in a £60m deal but has struggled to settle in the French capital. He has scored an impressive 18 goals in 29 appearances but has become increasingly frustrated by boss Laurent Blanc's decision to play him out wide instead of in his more favoured central role.

While the news of Cavani's snub is a huge blow for the fallen giants, signing Carvalho would be a huge boost.

The 21-year-old is regarded as the biggest star in Portuguese football right now and United scouts have watched him 15 times this season.

Carvalho is also being chased by Chelsea and Manchester City, but United have now opened the bidding for him.
