Real Madrid tried to sign Mario Gómez

Real Madrid, at the instigation of manager Carlo Ancelotti, tried this summer to sign German forward Mario Gómez, who in the end left Bayern and joined Fiorentina.
As Gómez himself explains in an interview published in the German sports daily 'Kicker', Ancelotti was "interested" in bringing him into the squad, but he himself turned it down for fear of spending time on the bench.

"I was flattered by the offer because all of my family support Real Madrid. I was grateful for their interest and I then told my agent that I only wanted to go to Florence", the German international went on.

If he had ended up at Madrid, Gómez would have had to fight for his place with Karim Benzema, who plays in the same position. "I want to go on giving my all and not just play half the matches for a top club and win a lot of trophies. I want to be playing Sundays, Wednesdays and Sundays again", Gómez said.

All the same, Gómez, who had played at Bayern for the last four seasons, does regard it as "a backward step" having to play in the Europa League this season, after winning the Champions League with Bayern Munich last season.

Gómez, who is 28, was transferred from Bayern Munich to Fiorentina at the beginning of July for for about €20 million. In the four years he played for Bayern, he scored 112 goals in 172 games.
