Former AC Milan player Pietro Vierchowod is appalled by suggestions that the club could sell Stephan El Shaarawy.
The Italian international has been linked with a move to Manchester City this summer, despite speaking openly about his desire to stay with AC Milan. Rossoneri vice-president Adriano Gallaini stoked the fires further by admitting last month that he was open to the possibility of selling El Shaarawy for the right price.
However, Vierchowod reminded fans and the Milan board that the forward's goals played a vital part in the team's third place finish in the Serie A this season.
"He pulled the wagon when the team was at the bottom of the standings," he pointed out.
"Now everyone is praising Balotelli but he only came in January, when the Rossoneri were already rising thanks to goals from El Shaarawy."
The former centre-back urged the Rossoneri to show more gratitude for El Shaarawy's contributions.
"The club should have better appreciated this player, who was essential for so many months," Vierchowod stated.
"At this time, he deserves more respect. Instead, he seems to have been a bit forgotten because of this dip in form."
