Fergie’s new £2m pay deal

ALEX FERGUSON will be paid £2million a year to be an ambassador for Manchester United following his retirement.

That is the bumper pay package the club have agreed to make sure his standing and experience is not lost.

Fergie, 71, moves into the role as director and ambassador at the end of this season after finishing his 26½-year reign at Old Trafford.

The Scot cannot assume the duties of the new job until he has fully recovered from his hip operation this summer.

And he will stay at home instead of travelling to Australia and the Far East for pre-season tours.

However, he will be used to attract and meet major sponsors in a global role and advise on club matters.

It is the same job Ferguson had been due to take in 2002 when he originally planned to retire.

Back then there was a huge bust-up over his wages for the job, with the club wanting to pay him only £150,000.

An agreement was reached to pay him £1m — but he then went back on his retirement plans.

Ferguson will not have an office at Carrington or Old Trafford as he wants to take a step back from team affairs and not be around the players.

He believes it is only right that new boss David Moyes gets a total free rein.

While he will be around for guidance if asked, he insists there will be no meddling.
