Gunners considering summer bid for Saints’ Uruguayan star.
Arsenal are thought to be monitoring the progress of Southampton’s Uruguayan striker Gaston Ramirez.
The forward has enjoyed a good debut season in the Premier League, receiving plaudits for his vision and technique.
The player’s performances have not gone unnoticed by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who believes Ramirez would be perfectly suited to his club’s style of football.
Arsenal are currently in the market for a forward after disappointing seasons from summer signings Lukas Podoloski and Olivier Giroud.
The pair were brought in as replacements for former Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie but neither player has stepped up to the challenge of replacing the prolific Dutch striker.
Wenger is keen to bring in attacking reinforcements to ensure his side do not suffer a repeat of the performances this season which has seen the North London club lose ground to Tottenham and Chelsea in the race for a Champions League qualification spot.
That could pave the way for a summer bid for Ramirez but a move is thought to depend on whether Southampton remain in the Premier League.
The Saints beat off competition from a number of top European sides to secure the player’s signature from Bologna in a £12 million deal last summer but are unlikely to be able to hold on to the player should they suffer relegation to the Championship.
