Fiorentina has agreed on a transfer fee with Villarreal for star New Jersey-born striker Giuseppe Rossi, with contractual details soon to be sorted.
Reports had linked the former Manchester United forward with a number of Italian clubs in the past couple of months, including Inter and Juventus. The Viola have emerged as the most likely side to secure the Italy international's signature over the past couple of days, though, and the signing now seems like a mere formality with both parties deciding upon a transfer fee.
"Fiorentina and Villarreal can confirm that they have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Giuseppe Rossi outright, subject to the signing of the contract," Fiorentina said in statement.
Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport had reported that Fiorentina was prepared to pay 12.5 million euros for the 25-year-old Italy international, although there has been no official confirmation of the final fee.
Rossi has not played since October 2011. He tore his right ACL against Real Madrid and spent six months on the sideline, only to return the following April and tear it again. While on the sideline, he saw Villarreal relegated to the Spanish Segunda Division, and he missed out on Italy's march to the Euro 2012 final.
