Former Colombia star Freddy Rincon has joined professional Colombian outfit America de Cali almost 10 years after announcing that he had quit the game.

The midfielder enjoyed a spell at the club between 1990-1993 and also played for various teams in Europe, including Napoli and Real Madrid.

The 46-year-old had revealed he had hung up his boots for Brazilian side Corinthians in 2004, before having a spell as coach of the club's youth team later that decade, but it seems the lure of playing the game again has proven too much after speaking to Diego Umana.

"I talked to Diego Umana and my family. I want to play in America, it is not for money, it is for my family and my sons," he told reporters of Diario Mio. "It is a challenge that will not be easy, but I am not a loser and I am going to prepare properly to play.

"I need to have my head prepared from the first moment I start training, I want to play, I have the desire to do so."

Rincon appeared 84 times for Colombia, scoring 17 goals and played in three World Cups in his career. His son, 18-year-old Sebastian Rincon, is a forward for the Portland Timbers in MLS.
