Redknapp has agreed terms on a £3million-a-year two-and-a-half contract at Loftus Road, and has been promised substantial bonuses if he can keep QPR in the Premier League this season.

In order to do that, Redknapp believes he needs up to three new signings in the January transfer window, and the former Spurs boss is targeting proven performers.

They include ex-QPR striker Peter Crouch, who is currently at Stoke, along with West Ham captain Kevin Nolan, but his top target will be a reunion with Tottenham’s Defoe.

The England international has enjoyed a long career working with Redknapp, during spells at
West Ham, Portsmouth and then Spurs, and has a track record as an established Premier League goalscorer.

Redknapp believes he can convince the player to move across the capital, but doing a deal with his former employers will prove tricky, given Andre Villas-Boas’ determination to keep Defoe.

The deal is unlikely to be the last between the two sides, with QPR also eyeing Michael Dawson, while Villas-Boas maintains an interest in winger Junior Hoilett.
