Reds’ Clint deal in doubt

KOP CHASE ... Liverpool fancy Fulham striker Dempsey
BRENDAN RODGERS has revealed Liverpool have contacted Fulham about Clint Dempsey.
But the deal is far from done as the Reds were forced into an embarrassing climbdown over the American frontman.
A row broke out after the Kop’s US owners Fenway Sports Group announced on its website: ‘Dempsey joins club.’
But just as Liverpool fans prepared to hail the man who hit 23 goals last season, yesterday’s story was hastily taken down. And the Londoners flatly denied a deal for the £10million-rated ace had been done.
The 29-year-old is currently in Germany on a pre-season tour but did not even make the bench in last night’s 4-0 win against Locomotive Leipzig.
Dempsey has just one year left on his deal and is refusing to sign a three-year extension.
Anfield chief Rodgers said: “Clint is a player we have enquired about, it’s as simple as that. Our managing director Ian Ayre has spoken with the club to see what the position is. That is where we are at.
“He is a very talented player but we don’t like to talk about other club’s players.”
Cottagers manager Martin Jol has already lined up Juventus striker Vincenzo Iaquinto, 32, as a replacement.
His agent Andrea D’Amico admitted: “Fulham? That’s a concrete possibility.”
Rodgers also said the club were not looking to loan out Andy Carroll.
He said: “To consider a loan period for someone the club spent £35million on isn’t something we’re looking to do at this moment in time.”
