FIFA’S decision to finally embrace goal-line technology is long overdue.

That’s the view of England midfielder Frank Lampard, who still smarts at how he was robbed of a storming equaliser against Germany at the 2010 World Cup.

But the Chelsea star is pleased the 21st-century technology has finally been given the go-ahead.

Lamps said: “It’s a no-brainer and long overdue when you consider the importance of so many games these days. Proving whether the ball is over the line or not is just too important not to bring it in.

“We saw it as recently as the England match with Ukraine at Euro 2012. That was a touch-and-go decision so it was virtually impossible for the officials to say for sure whether the ball was over or not.

“But the technology is there to help the ref and apparently he will know in just one second if it’s a goal or a goal-line clearance.

“I just wish it had been there for my ‘goal’ in South Africa. I knew the ball was in because of the angle it came down off the bar.

“When I saw the replay I couldn’t believe how far over the line it actually was. That was hard to take — I’m sure that goal would have changed the game. It would have been 2-2 and we would have had all the momentum.

“So that goal will always be lurking there at the back of my mind.”

But Lampard is against a mad rush now to use the technology to also decide penalty decisions and offsides.

He added: “Let’s see how the goal-line stuff goes first because we don’t want to have matches continually stopped to consider controversial situations. If it can be done quickly and effectively, then maybe.”
