As 5,000 visiting fans celebrated, 40,000 Arsenal supporters had the look of tortured souls. Watching their team trying to contain players far inferior to their own was embarrassing. The sight of defenders being dragged out of position time after time; the sight of Fabianski flapping.
The only surprise after the first half-hour was that Shrewsbury’s advantage remained at just one goal. Four minutes after that, though, Arsenal were level, Gibbs meeting a superb cross from Carl Jenkinson with a header Smith allowed to sneak inside his near post.
