Benoit Assou-Ekotto has given the strongest indication yet that Luka Modric could be set to remain at Spurs.
The Croatian midfielder has been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea all summer after publicly declaring his desire to swap White Hart Lane for Stamford Bridge, but Spurs stood firm and refused to sell at any cost.
And now Assou-Ekotto has told talkSPORT that during a conversation with Modric he revealed he would be happy to remain at the club.
“It is good for the team but more important if he stays he has to stay and be happy,” Assou-Ekotto said. “If he stays and he is not happy there is no point to keep one player who is not happy in the team.
“We are happy if he stays and I hope he will be happy for the rest of the season. When I asked him if he was happy he said ‘Yeah, if I move it is good, if I don’t move I am not at a bad club’.
“He understands the chairman as he wants to have a good team so he has to keep his player.”
