SWANSEA have opened talks with star defender Ashley Williams over a bumper new deal.

Williams, 26, helped the Swansea clinch promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs last season.

His form led to interest from fellow top-flight newcomers QPR and Norwich, along with West Brom.

But Swansea want the Wales international, under contract until 2013, to sign a new long-term deal.

His agent Jamie Moralee said: “We are in early negotiations with the club to extend his deal by another year or two.

“There have been other clubs looking at him and there have been a couple of bids but he is happy with his football in Wales and with Swansea.”

Williams and Swansea face a pre-season game at Welsh Premier League side Afan Lido today.
