Two huge deals are set to be confirmed before the close of the window at 11pm, with Andy Carroll joining Liverpool from Newcastle for £35million and Fernando Torres set to move to Chelsea for an extraordinary £50million.

As the dramatic events unfolded throughout Monday, a number of players took to Twitter to express their surprise at some of the deals.

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas tweeted to his 370,000 followers: ‘#transferdeadlineday going crazy today in england.... I never expected what‘s happening.’

His Arsenal team-mate Robin van Perise also expressed his shock at the huge transfers going through, posting: ‘BIG spending this transfer window! Didn't expect this at all. Curious what gonna happen these last couple of hours!!!’

England captain Rio Ferdinand continually tweeted through the day and wrote of his admiration for Carroll but questioned the size of the transfer deals being agreed.

‘Carrol has huge potential no doubt,is 35m still not a hefty sum of money in this recession we r meant to be in!?He will be top player #fact,’ Ferdinand posted.
