7M - Gavi Downplays Post-World Cup Final Scuffle With Argentina

Following Spain's 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, tension boiled over on the pitch. A confrontation between substitute players celebrating the win quickly escalated into a heated scuffle involving Rodri, Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Eric Garcia, Dani Olmo, Thiago Almada, and Gavi. Coaching staff and security personnel eventually stepped in to restrain the situation.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has initiated an investigation using broadcast clips, match reports, and collected evidence to assess potential sanctions for violent behavior or mass altercations, which can carry bans of three or more matches. FIFA clarified that Paredes was not shown a red card after the game, though the incident remains included in the official match report.

Addressing the controversy, Gavi expressed a forgiving perspective regarding the altercations. The Barcelona midfielder stated that while such scenes setting a poor example for youth, heightened emotions and physical altercations are an inherent element of high-stakes football. He suggested that match dismissals should suffice rather than post-tournament suspensions. FIFA will ultimately determine whether any retroactive disciplinary actions will be imposed.
