7M - Cristiano Ronaldo appears to like post claiming Fifa helped Argentina reach World Cup final

Cristiano Ronaldo has appeared to like an Instagram post claiming that Fifa helped Argentina reach the World Cup final.

Ronaldo and Portugal crashed out of the tournament in the last-16 following a 1-0 defeat to Spain earlier this month. It marked the end of the 41-year-old's World Cup career, 20 years after his tournament debut.

Meanwhile, his main rival Lionel Messi went on to reach the final with Argentina, where they eventually lost out to Spain. Argentina had some favourable decisions go their way throughout the tournament, from Messi avoiding a red card in their opening match against Algeria to being saved by a disallowed goal in their 3-2 victory over Egypt.

Ronaldo appeared to agree that Argentina benefitted from some decisions on their way to the final by allegedly liking an Instagram post accusing Fifa of corruption. The Portugal captain's account appeared to like the post from Espejo Publico, which was published last week. In the video, journalist Pilar Rodríguez Losantos accused Fifa of being "one of the most corrupt institutions on planet earth."

The like from Ronaldo's account is no longer visible on Instagram.

After the defeat to Spain earlier this month, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner insisted that it was his final World Cup as a player. However, he refused to rule out playing at Euro 2028 in the UK and Ireland.

Ronaldo said: "I'm sad to exit the World Cup like this. But I gave everything. Well, I gave my best. And I leave with a clear conscience.

"This is football, this is the life of a footballer. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. And you have to keep going.

"The truth is that it was my last World Cup, yes. But now I will have time to think, to be with my family and not to decide things with a hot head. And to continue with life.

"How do I feel today? The same. With a clear conscience. I gave my best. I have won three titles for Portugal.

"Before Cristiano, Portugal hadn't won any titles. So, I'm happy.

"The truth is that the biggest title I won with the national team was in 2016 which, for me, has the same value as a World Cup, honestly.

"That's why, I repeat, I leave with a clear conscience, I gave my best and that's it. Tomorrow will be a new day and life goes on."
