Egypt goalscorer Mostafa Ziko has joined his manager in saying 'the World Cup is directed towards Argentina' following their 3-2 round of 16 defeat on Tuesday (July 7).

Egypt were 2-0 up heading into the final ten minutes of normal time only for goals from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and Enzo Fernandez to secure a memorable comeback.

Things could have been very different, however, because Ziko, 29, had a goal ruled out for a foul in the build-up following VAR intervention.

Speaking to reporters after the game, a furious Egypt manager Hossam Hassan said that the World Cup is ‘directed towards Argentina’, something Ziko has now echoed.

During an interview with Canadian broadcaster TSN immediately after the game, Egypt goalscorer Ziko said, via a translator: “It was not fair from the referee. It was really not fair, that was very clear. He wasted all of our efforts with his decisons. We were leading 2-0 and we cannot do anything, it’s all up to God.

“We are so sorry (to the people of Egypt). I am so sorry. We wanted to make you all happy. It was not in the cards. It was the referee. The cup is directed towards Argentina.”
