Egypt's fairytale run at the 2026 World Cup came to a heartbreaking conclusion on Tuesday, as the Pharaohs were edged out 3-2 by tournament heavyweights Argentina in a dramatic Round of 16 clash.
The African side stunned the South American favourites early on. Yasser Ibrahim rose highest to nod home the opener in the 15th minute, and Mostafa Ziko doubled the lead just past the hour mark, slotting in from a well-delivered cross. Argentina were handed a golden opportunity to respond as early as the 21st minute when Nicolás Tagliafico won a spot-kick, but Pharaohs goalkeeper Mostafa Ahmed Shobeir produced a heroic save to keep out Lionel Messi's penalty. Argentina eventually pulled one back through Cristian Romero in the 79th minute, before Messi made amends in spectacular fashion, firing home the equaliser just four minutes later. Then, deep into added time, Enzo Fernández powered in a header in the third minute of stoppage time to complete the turnaround and seal a 3-2 victory for the Albiceleste.
Argentina marched into Tuesday's contest with a perfect record of four wins from four, and they remain firmly on course for glory. For Messi, the 39-year-old icon who may be taking part in his final World Cup, the journey continues. His side now await the winner of the Switzerland–Colombia tie, with a quarter-final showdown scheduled for July 11.
For Egypt, however, the defeat does little to diminish what has been a tournament to remember. This was the first time the Pharaohs had ever reached the knockout phase, making it the deepest World Cup run in the nation's history. They had previously qualified in 1934, 1990 and 2018, but had never managed a single victory or progressed beyond the group stage.
That all changed this year. A historic 1-0 win over New Zealand in the group phase gave Egypt their first-ever World Cup triumph. Spearheaded by Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, the Pharaohs finished second in their group behind Belgium, collecting five points from draws against Belgium and Iran alongside that landmark victory. They then edged past Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a goalless stalemate through extra time in the Round of 32, setting up their historic last-16 appearance.
Much of the credit for the team's transformation has gone to manager Hossam Hassan, a legendary figure from his playing days, who has been widely applauded for steering Egypt to their greatest-ever achievement on the global stage.
Although the adventure ended in Atlanta, the Pharaohs' campaign has been hailed as a breakthrough for a nation that had long struggled to leave its mark at the World Cup.
With Egypt now out of the competition, Morocco carry the hopes of both the Middle East and Africa as the sole remaining representative from those regions. The Atlas Lions are set to face France in the quarter-finals on Thursday, having progressed past Canada in the Round of 16.
