7M - Switzerland 2-0 Algeria: Murat Yakin's side reach World Cup last 16 for first time in 88 years with comfortable win

Switzerland finally broke their tournament curse by defeating Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver to seal a place in the World Cup round of 16.

The Swiss national team had suffered elimination in all seven of their previous knockout match appearances. However, goals from Breel Embolo after 10 minutes and Nottingham Forest winger Dan Ndoye at the 46-minute mark successfully put an end to 88 years of knockout heartbreak. Murat Yakin's side put on a comfortable performance at BC Place, completely neutralising former Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez despite a bright opening spell from the Algerian team.

The only minor blemish on a dominant display arrived late in the game when substitute Fabian Rieder somehow failed to convert from point-blank range into an open goal. Manuel Akanji also proved vital at the back, blocking a 50th-minute attempt from his ex-club teammate Mahrez.

With this victory, Switzerland advance to face either Colombia or Ghana next Tuesday at 9pm in Vancouver.
