Portugal secured a thrilling place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a drama-filled 2-1 victory over Croatia at the Toronto Stadium.
Following a scoreless first half, Ivan Perisic broke the deadlock to give Croatia the lead in the 53rd minute. Portugal responded in the 68th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo successfully converted a penalty kick, marking his first career knockout stage goal in World Cup history.
With the match heading toward a stalemate, substitute Goncalo Ramos glanced in a sensational header in the fourth minute of stoppage time (90+4') to put Portugal ahead. Croatia appeared to score a last-gasp equalizer deep into injury time, but the goal was ultimately disallowed for offside following a lengthy VAR review. Portugal held on to survive the late scare and will advance to face Spain in the Round of 16.
