7M - England 2 - 1 Congo DR:Harry Kane double rescues England against DR Congo at World Cup

Harry Kane's brace spared England from World Cup embarrassment as Thomas Tuchel's side survived a major scare against DR Congo to book a tantalising last-16 clash with co-hosts Mexico.

A decade on from the humiliating European Championship exit to Iceland, history threatened to repeat itself when Brian Cipenga's early strike left England facing the prospect of falling at the first knockout hurdle to unfancied opponents.

England toiled for long stretches and struggled to beat inspired DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, but Tuchel's men kept their composure—and at times rode their luck—as Kane's second-half double completed a 2-1 comeback victory in the round of 32.

It was the first time England had won a World Cup match after conceding first since the 1966 final, and Wednesday's unconvincing display raises serious questions over whether they can get past Mexico, let alone reach the final.

DR Congo, playing in their first ever knockout match at this stage, all too easily exposed England's defensive frailties, and Yoane Wissa struck the goal frame late in the first half, during which Kane felt he had been wrongly denied a penalty.

Tension and audible frustration grew as the second half wore on, only for substitute Anthony Gordon to twice set up his captain to secure the comeback win and a last-16 meeting with Mexico at the Azteca.
