7M - Mexico 2-0 Ecuador: Clinical Mexico Defeat Ecuador 2-0 to Break Historic Knockout Curse

Co-hosts Mexico produced a commanding performance at the Estadio Azteca, eliminating South American contenders Ecuador with a convincing 2-0 triumph in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 to advance to the Round of 16. The momentous victory officially puts an end to El Tri's decades-long elimination curse in World Cup knockout fixtures, stretching back to 1986.

The highly anticipated clash experienced an anxious start, as a severe electrical thunderstorm delayed the opening whistle in Mexico City by nearly an hour. However, the unexpected delay did nothing to disrupt Javier Aguirre's game plan. Mexico registered their breakthrough in the 22nd minute when Roberto Alvarado capitalized on a defensive lapse to thread a superb pass to Julián Quiñones, who clinical shifted inside and fired home to make it 1-0.

Just nine minutes later, the stadium erupted again. Turning provider, Quiñones delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, allowing veteran striker Raúl Jiménez to unleash a powerful, unstoppable drive past Ecuadorian keeper Hernán Galíndez to double the advantage. Ecuador pushed aggressively in the second half but were repeatedly denied by crucial goal-line clearances from defender César Montes and a spectacular performance by goalkeeper Raúl Rangel. To compound Ecuador's frustration, defender Piero Hincapié was shown a straight red card deep in stoppage time following a cynical challenge reviewed by VAR. Mexico see out the 2-0 victory and will now move on to face either England or DR Congo in the next round.
