Robert Lewandowski has joined Major League Soccer (MLS) side Chicago Fire as a free agent after his contract with Barcelona came to an end this summer. The Polish striker was linked with FC Porto, but is heading to the United States.
Chicago Fire announced on Monday the signing of the 37-year-old, who will play outside Europe for the first time.0Lewandowski will fill one of the Designated Player slots, with a contract signed until 2028.
In Chicago, the metropolitan area in the United States with the largest Polish community in the country,0Lewy will play alongside Portuguese players Leonardo Barroso and Andre Franco under the guidance of Gregg Berhalter.
The Fire are currently third in the Eastern Conference of the MLS, with 26 points, seven behind leaders Nashville and five behind Inter Miami.
Lewandowski came through the youth ranks at Legia and went on to play for Lech Poznan, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern and Barcelona. He won the German league ten times, was a three-time Spanish champion and Polish champion, lifted a Champions League trophy, a Club World Cup and a UEFA Super Cup, as well as winning domestic cups in Poland, Germany and Spain.
A Polish international on 167 occasions, he featured at the European Championships in 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024, and also played at the 2018 World Cup.
