Jubilant England fans celebrate group-topping World Cup win over Panama

England supporters erupted in wild celebrations after the Three Lions secured top spot in their World Cup group with a dominant victory over Panama.

Thanks to goals from Jude Bellingham and captain Harry Kane, Thomas Tuchel’s side claimed a crucial three points to seal first-place progression, sparking chaotic scenes among fans both across the UK and in American bars. Supporters cheered loudly, tossed beers into the air and sang chants to mark the brilliant group-stage finale.

The clash took place at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, hosting England’s largest supporter turnout of the entire tournament so far. The fixture unfolded under persistent rainfall, with the Three Lions and their travelling faithful adapting perfectly to the gloomy, wet weather conditions.

Dedicated England fans embraced the patriotic occasion in full spirit, donning red-and-white face paint, brandishing St George’s flags and even wearing medieval knight costumes to back their team. The emphatic win allowed England to move on from their disappointing goalless draw with Ghana earlier in the group stage, finishing their campaign atop the standings.
Harry Kane’s second-half strike sent travelling fans into euphoria, doubling England’s lead and putting the game beyond Panama’s reach. While English supporters filled local US bars to celebrate with cold pints, passionate Panama fans gathered in New York’s Times Square, waving national flags and scarves to back their side until the final whistle.

New York’s Williamsburg district saw huge queues of fans flooding popular sports venues including Banter Bar, Legends, Carragher’s and The Long Acre. The celebrations followed late-night scenes on Friday, where hundreds of England supporters danced and sang with pints in hand across city bars. Many fans also made the most of their US trip by enjoying darts sessions at Madison Square Garden ahead of the big game.

This England–Panama fixture was the fifth of eight World Cup matches held at the MetLife Stadium and the final group-stage game hosted at the venue. The ground carries an infamous reputation in sport, widely nicknamed the “ACL Cemetery”. Over the years, countless NFL stars have suffered devastating, career-threatening ACL injuries on its pitch, earning it the unwanted cursed tag. Located roughly eight miles north of Newark, New Jersey’s largest city, the stadium sits geographically closer to New York City.

Ahead of the fixture, the England squad completed their final training session in Kansas City after overnight heavy downpours, before flying east to New York to finalise preparations.

This victory handed England seven points from three group games, securing safe passage to the knockout rounds. In contrast, Panama crashed out of the tournament early, eliminated after successive defeats against Ghana and Croatia.
Finishing as group winners means England will travel to Atlanta for their Round of 32 tie. The Three Lions could face a range of opponents, including Ecuador, Senegal, Iraq, Algeria, Austria, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal or DR Congo. A successful knockout run would set up a highly anticipated potential clash with tournament hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium.
