‘A golden opportunity’ – Ten Hag thrilled to land former Manchester United loanee Weghorst at FC Twente
FC Twente have sealed a two-year deal to bring in seasoned Dutch striker Wout Weghorst, who became a free agent upon leaving Ajax. The high-profile capture marks a major victory for newly appointed technical director Erik ten Hag, who previously managed the towering frontman during his temporary loan stint at Manchester United.
Eredivisie side complete big-name striker signing

The Enschede-based club has finalised the landmark free transfer of the 33-year-old forward. Weghorst is currently representing the Netherlands at the ongoing World Cup, having netted 20 goals across his two seasons playing for Ajax in Amsterdam. Ten Hag pulled plenty of strings behind closed doors to wrap up negotiations, persuading his former Old Trafford striker to commit his immediate future to the Eredivisie outfit.

Ten Hag hails landmark striker acquisition

The ex-Manchester United manager voiced huge pride after securing the services of the proven goalscorer. He insists Weghorst’s relentless work rate and extensive international experience will lift standards within the squad both on the pitch and behind the scenes.

“Everyone at FC Twente is incredibly proud that Wout Weghorst is joining us,” Ten Hag commented. “Any club would be overjoyed to sign a Dutch international with more than 50 caps to his name.

“This signing represents a golden chance for our club. He is an elite professional who embodies total dedication to the game. A player of his calibre is normally far out of our reach at FC Twente.

“He possesses relentless drive and huge ambition. As a local boy, Wout has massive motivation to create special memories here. We firmly believe he will be a pivotal figure in Twente’s upcoming success, bringing that vital extra edge we’ve been missing.”

Weghorst fulfils lifelong boyhood dream

This move carries deep personal significance for Weghorst, who was raised in nearby Borne and grew up a lifelong Twente supporter. As a young fan, he watched the club lift major domestic silverware from the stands, and the Dutch forward admits pulling on Twente’s jersey ticks the last remaining box on his football bucket list.
“This transfer means everything to me, and I’m immensely proud to wear the FC Twente shirt next season,” Weghorst shared. “I was in the stands to celebrate our cup triumphs at De Kuip back in 2001 and 2011, partied on Oude Markt when we claimed the league title in 2010, and witnessed countless unforgettable European nights at De Grolsch Veste. Those moments are etched into my memory forever.

“I’ve already checked off so many footballing goals throughout my career, but one dream remained unfulfilled. Now everything has come full circle. Next term, I will give every ounce of effort to win trophies with Twente – no longer as a supporter in the crowd, but as one of the team’s players.”
