World Cup debutants Cape Verde made history at the NRG Stadium in Houston by securing a spot in the next stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia. The Blue Sharks claimed second place in Group H and are now scheduled to face Argentina.
With a population of just half a million, the African nation advanced through the group stage completely unbeaten despite not winning a single match. They completed their group campaign with five points, finishing behind group leaders Spain who had seven points, while both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia were eliminated with two points each. Cape Verde previously secured a 0-0 draw against Spain and a 2-2 tie with Uruguay before this final match.
The decisive breakthrough came as Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 in Guadalajara, which guaranteed progression for Cape Verde. Saudi Arabia fought hard but suffered an early setback when Hassan Al-Tambakti went off injured. Late in the match, Cape Verde missed clear chances to win as Laros Duarte failed to convert a one-on-one opportunity in the 75th minute, while Pina and Garry Rodrigues also missed the target. Ultimately, their disciplined defensive block held firm to seal the historic qualification.
