The Netherlands coasted into the World Cup knockout stages as Group F winners after executing a ruthless first-half blitz to defeat an already-eliminated Tunisia 3-1 at Kansas City Stadium.
Ronald Koeman’s side required less than seven minutes to dismantle the African side's defensive block, hitting double figures for goals scored in the group stages and booking a mouthwatering Last-32 showdown against Morocco.
The Oranje, who needed to match or better Japan’s concurrent result against Sweden to claim the group’s pole position, flew out of the blocks inside three minutes. Real Madrid-bound wing-back Denzel Dumfries delivered a trademark heavy cross into the danger zone, forcing Tunisia captain Ellyes Skhiri to comically slice the ball into his own net—equaling the men's World Cup tournament record of 12 own goals.
Before Tunisia could regroup, the Dutch struck again just four minutes later. Skipper Virgil van Dijk rose highest to nod a deep free-kick across the face of the penalty area, setting up Brian Brobbey to smash a dynamic volley past Aymen Dahmen for his third goal of the tournament.
Tunisia offered a brief scare in the second half when they capitalized on a set-piece in the 54th minute. Dynamic midfielder Hannibal Mejbri whipped in a precise corner, allowing Hazem Mastouri to produce a brilliant glancing header past Bart Verbruggen to throw the African nation a lifeline.
However, any hopes of a historic comeback were dashed eight minutes later. Tijjani Reijnders swung a pinpoint corner into the mixer, and Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke met it with a powerful header that deflected off Anis Ben Slimane to restore the Netherlands' comfortable two-goal cushion.
The Dutch could have extended their lead late on, with Reijnders rattling the crossbar with a sensational chip and substitute Memphis Depay targeting the net with an acrobatic overhead kick, but the damage was already done. By avoiding defeat and securing maximum points, Koeman’s men successfully side-stepped a potential knockout clash with Brazil, setting up their camp for Monday's journey to Monterrey.
