South Africa produced an incredible tactical masterclass to book their place in the World Cup Round of 32, defeating South Korea 1-0 in a high-stakes, winner-takes-all Group A finale at a sweltering Monterrey Stadium.
A second-half goal from rising star Thapelo Maseko proved to be the difference on a night that saw Hugo Broos’ men break their long-standing international hoodoo and claim their first-ever competitive senior victory over the Taegeuk Warriors.
Played under grueling conditions with pitch-side temperatures soaring past 34 degrees, both sides struggled to find an attacking rhythm in a tense and tightly-contested first half. South Korea looked organized in their compact mid-block, while Bafana Bafana tried to utilize their pace out wide through Mofokeng and Appollis to stretch the Asian side's defense.
The breakthrough finally came in the 63rd minute. Following a rapid offensive sequence, Maseko kept his composure to fire past South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu. The goal triggered an anxious wait as VAR conducted a lengthy review for a potential infringement in the build-up, but the decision ultimately stood, sending the South African bench into raptures.
In response, South Korea manager Hong Myung-bo introduced talisman Son Heung-min and forward Cho Gue-sung off the bench to inject life into his struggling frontline. Despite absorbing immense pressure in the final twenty minutes, the South African backline stood firm under the leadership of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
South Africa managed to navigate the cagey closing stages safely, even after picking up a yellow card for defender Aubrey Modiba, to secure a famous clean sheet. The historical 1-0 victory means Bafana Bafana snap their seven-match winless streak in spectacular fashion, advancing out of Group A alongside leaders Mexico, while South Korea are condemned to an early flight home.
