MIAMI GARDENS — World Cup first-timers Cape Verde wrote another glorious chapter in their fairy-tale journey, fighting back to secure a sensational 2-2 draw against South American giants Uruguay at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday.
Having already frustrated European champions Spain in a scoreless draw in their opening match, the Blue Sharks once again proved they belong on the world's biggest stage, leaving Marcelo Bielsa’s star-studded Uruguay side in a precarious position heading into the final group match.
The African nation sent their traveling fans into raptures in the 21st minute when Telmo Arcanjo won a free-kick. Midfielder Kevin Pina stepped up and unleashed a low, powerful 34-yard drive that pierced a gap in the Uruguayan wall, hitting the bottom corner to register Cape Verde's historic first-ever goal in a FIFA World Cup finals.
La Celeste responded with the urgency expected of two-time world champions, turning the game on its head with a quick-fire double just before the interval. In the 44th minute, Maxi Araújo reacted quickest to nod home a rebound after Rodrigo Bentancur’s header rattled the post. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Araújo turned provider, cushioning a fine header into the path of Agustín Canobbio, who calmly slotted past Vozinha to give Uruguay a 2-1 halftime lead.
However, Cape Verde refused to surrender. In the 61st minute, a horrific defensive misunderstanding gifted the underdogs an equalizer. Uruguay defender Mathías Olivera played a careless, underhit back pass, allowing substitute Hélio Varela to intercept. With goalkeeper Fernando Muslera caught stranded in no-man's-land, Varela kept his composure to bypass the keeper and roll the ball into an un-guarded net.
Despite a relentless late onslaught from Uruguay, marshaled by energetic attacks and substitutions, Cape Verde’s backline held firm under immense pressure to see out a historic result.
The dramatic draw leaves Group H wide open. Spain sits comfortably at the top with four points, while Uruguay and Cape Verde are tied for second with two points each. Uruguay now faces a daunting, must-win clash against Spain on Matchday 3, while Cape Verde firmly controls their own destiny as they prepare to face Saudi Arabia for a historic spot in the knockout stages.
