The Netherlands delivered a stunning performance at the Houston Stadium in Texas, dismantling Sweden 5-1 in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F fixture. Ronald Koeman's side showed absolute dominance from the opening whistle to secure a comfortable and memorable victory.
The Dutch team ignited their attack early in the first half. Brian Brobbey opened the scoring in just the 5th minute with a regular goal, converting early pressure into a 1-0 lead. It did not take long for Brobbey to double his tally. In the 17th minute, the forward struck again to put the Netherlands firmly in control at 2-0. Sweden struggled to create meaningful opportunities against a compact Dutch defense marshaled by Virgil van Dijk, and the first half concluded with a clear advantage for the home side.
The second half began with tactical adjustments, as Crysencio Summerville replaced Donyell Malen for the Netherlands. The change yielded immediate results. In the 47th minute, Cody Gakpo extended the lead to 3-0 with a clinical finish. Sweden's frustrations began to show, with Gabriel Gudmundsson receiving a yellow card in the 53rd minute. Just a minute later, in the 54th minute, Gakpo scored his second goal of the match, compounding Sweden's misery and making it 4-0.
Sweden made a triple substitution in the 55th minute, bringing on Besfort Zeneli, Lucas Bergvall, and Anthony Elanga to replace Jesper Karlström, Benjamin Nygren, and Alexander Bernhardsson. The changes provided a brief spark for the visitors. In the 59th minute, substitute Anthony Elanga managed to pull one back for Sweden, making it 4-1.
Following the Swedish goal, Ronald Koeman introduced Teun Koopmeiners and Guus Til for Frenkie de Jong and Tijjani Reijnders to refresh the midfield. Later in the 71st minute, Memphis Depay came on for the braced hero Brian Brobbey. Sweden continued to pick up bookings as the match grew out of reach, with Yasin Ayari cautioned in the 75th minute and Lucas Bergvall receiving a yellow card in the 80th minute.
The Netherlands put the final exclamation mark on their spectacular performance in the 89th minute. Crysencio Summerville capped off his excellent second-half display with a goal to make it 5-1. In the final minutes, Noa Lang replaced Cody Gakpo, and Sweden brought on Elliot Stroud for Gabriel Gudmundsson, but the outcome had long been decided. The referee blew the final whistle to confirm a resounding 5-1 victory for the Netherlands.
