Real Madrid's talks with Alvarez have failed as Barcelona seek to pounce this summer
Real Madrid's deal for Julian Alvarez has fallen through as rivals Barcelona seek to seal the deal.
Alvarez is contracted to Atletico until 2030 and carries a €500M release clause, handing the Spanish side a major advantage in transfer negotiations.
Atletico rejected a formal €150m bid from Real Madrid earlier in 2026, without even considering or evaluating the bid according to reports as the club stand firm on their evaluation.
As Madrid were rejected, Arsenal and Barcelona have stepped into the limelight in recent weeks despite the price of the striker likely being the same amount as each club’s entire transfer budget.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano gave an update on the deal as the summer transfer window continues to stun fans in its opening weeks.
“Real Madrid are currently not advancing or progressing in talks for Juli1n 1lvarez, disappeared from the deal since €150m bid 10 days ago.
“Barcelona remain keen on Juli1n and in direct daily contact; but the deal depends on Atl9ti decision.”
Atletico are refusing to negotiate below the striker's astronomical release clause, leaving clubs with no choice but to pursue other options which may include a player swap in the coming months. Atletico president Enrique Cerezo recently spoke on his future which he believes is at Atletico.
"Julian is an Atletico Madrid player. Whoever wants him can come and look at the contract (the release clause), and if they’re interested, they’ll sign him; if not, they won’t.
“It seems like this is the story of the summer; you all know exactly how things stand. Julian is an Atletico Madrid player, and I believe he will remain an Atletico Madrid player.”
